A good deal of evidence was taken, the witnesses including E. R. Ussher, Public Works Department, who gave? the tresidts of tests made. He found thatth« s *able could not . be picked up easily by the gripper until 35 feet below the traoiner ! tab|e (it \f*B explained that the teiisidii had b<^n increased the day before the test). The car was pulled up by the brakes, after the word " stop " had been given, iv 25 feet on a 1 in 7 and 8 grade, and in 4t feet on a l in 5 grade. He believed it could not be so easily pulled up if heavily loaded, but Sparrow (engineer) thought it would make little difference ; that iv fact it should increase the efficacy of the slot and slipper brakes. The jury returned the following verdict : " We find that the deceased Kin Hay came to his death through No. 7 car bolting, owing to its not being attached to the cable before starting. x Further, we exonerate the driver from all blame, he having followed the usual practice."'
