(Per Press Association. ) WELLINGTON Nov. 13 John P. Milne, of Kirriemuir, Scotland, and » distinguished student of St. Andrews University, who arrived here for the benefit of his health on the sth inst, died in the hospital yesterday. The Imperial authorities have cabled to the Government, asking it to act as their agent in purchasing 5000 tons of oats. The Post Office Department reports that the new 'Frisco mail service will be begun by the Mariposa, leaving 'Frisco on the 21st inst. H. Warner, formerly a leading trades unionist here, has been elected by the carpenters and joiners of the whole of Australasia to represent them on the General Council in England. By a fire in a house in Grafton Road, owned by Chas. King and occupied by Mrs Weston, the building was gutted. Mrs Weston is insured for JE3OO in the New Zealand office and the house is supposed to be insured in the Royal for £500. The creditors of Mr Hone Heke, M.H.R., to-day passed a resolution that an order of immediate discharge be granted the bankrupt on his consenting to judgment being entered against him for the debts proved. A conference of inspectors of schools has been convened by the Minister of Education, to be held at the end of January. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 13. Charles A. Stratfocd, horse trainer, was charged at the Police Court to-day with aggravated assault on his wife. The case was dismissed, the evidence for the defence being that the complainant's injuries were received in a struggle with her mother, both women having been drinking. " Broncho George" was charged with having illtreated a bullock and cow at the Wild West Show by lassoing and riding them. The Magistrate said the exhibition was cruel and unnecessary ; no good object was served and the animals had been driven frantic by pain and fear. He inflicted a fine of £2 and refused an application to have the fine raised to £5 to enable an appeal to be taken to the Supreme Court. The police have Been watching a yard in Gloucester street, which was used by a "two up" school, and this afternoon they made a raid on the premises, where between Jorty and fifty men were gambling, and captured twelve of them after an exciting scene. All had money, and one was possessed of £61, while a considerable sum was in the ring in stakes. The men will be charged with breaches of the Gaining and Lotteries Act. The case against Henry Vincent Styche, charged with attempting to procure to murder, will not come on at the Supreme Court until the other cases have been disposed of. It is stated that Mrs Styche will be unable to give evidence.
