Orepuki Sports

(from oxtr own correspondent.) Our annual gala day broke with little liromise of being fine, and many were the ong faces that glanced anxiously at the sky. But although a strong wind blew during the greater part of the day, the excellent shelter around the sports grounds minimised any discomfort from that source, and the very large gathering enjoyed themselves immensely. Another factor in the enjoyment of the majority was the of a licensed booth, for although the money loss to the olub was dot to be despised, the total absence of anything like drunkenness was ample compensation. The takings at the gates broke all previous records, amounting v they did to the handsome sum of £57 ss, -which will leave the club a credit balance. On the whole the events were well contested and in most cases the fields were large. Unfortunately the train, which brought a very large number of passengers, was an hour late, which put the sports back a lot, and many events had to come off after the train left. The Pipe Band was the great centre of attraction with many and to the credit of the pipers they did not stint their performance. Following are the results of the sports: — Maiden Race (100 yards); 12 entries ; run in 4 heats — Crawford 1, Fallow 2. Sheffield Handicap ; 21 entries — Harris 1, Keen 2, Perry 3. Sawing ; 4 entries — McKenzie and Carson (3 sees) ; Tobin and Mcintosh (per). Hurdles 4220 yards) ; 23 entries : 4 beats — G. Signs (18yds), Robinson (scr). A protest was made against Sims and decision was deferred until other clubs are consulted. Wrestling : collar and elbow ; 5 entries — G. Baird, A Horton. Chopping ; 8 entries — O'Rourk (45 sees), Mcintosh (35 sees). Half-mile Race ; 20 entries — Laurie (45 yds), Porteous (45 yds). Hop, Step and Leap — J. Ford, M. Egan. Sack Race— F. Jarvis (scr), A. Bell (Byds). Flying Handicap ; 8 entries — Clifford (6 yds). Irish Jig — Reidy, Geddes. Highland Fling— Stewart, Geddes. Hornpipe — Geddes, Reidy. 440 Yards Flat— Sims, Sannders. [Protest against Sims]. Mile Race — Laurie (80yds), Lopdale (35yds): Youths' Race — H. Jarvis, McQuillain. Married Women's Race — Mrs Jarvis (box of tea, from Mr Cassels); Mrs Barry (pickle jar, from Messrs Broad, Small and Ob). Married Men's Race— A. White (scr), Jesperson (3yds). Mr D. McFarlane, Masonic Hotel, presented a medal to the winner of the chopping, and Mr Walker, watchmaker, a gold medal to the winner of the hurdle race. A number of impromptu events for children were also got off to the great delight of the your.g_.ter_, the prize money coming mostly from Mr McFarlane, to whom the club desires to convey their thanks.
