Paper is proving a very satisfactory material for driving ropes or bands. The rope is made like that from other materials and contains three main strands, each made up of a number of continuous strips of twisted pulp paper. The material is made waterproof by treatment with boiled oil. The rope is said to be fairly smooth and wonderfully pliant, and in recent test's for driving machinery it has only been slightly polished under conditions that have caused cotton rope to become badly worn and frayed By the San Francisco mail Morrow, Bassett and Co received information that the McCormick Harvesting Compan\- had won the Grand Prize for harvesting machinery at the Paris Exhibition. They also received the gold medal for twine, two medals in the department of metallurgy for superiority in forming metals into special parts for machines; in the department of machinery a medal for factory machinery, and also silver and bronze medalsinother classes. Inallthey took six medals, and the grand prize. The gold medal and 200 francs was also won by the McCormick binder in the field trial against all-comers.
