! RUNAWAY CAR TURNS A * SOMERSAULT. [By Telegraph.] Dunedin, Oct. 27. While the 9. 30 Rcslyn car was on the way down this morning the gripper failed to catch the rope. The efforts of the brakesman to stop the car were unavailing owing to the greasy state of the rails in consequence of rain, and the car sped like lightning down the track with nine passengers on board. A boy jumped off and escaped with slight bruises. When opposite the Catholic Cathedral a Chinese, who is believed to have jumped oft', was thrown against the iron fence at the Girls' High School and killed, a piece of bone 7in long being torn out of his head. His name was Kirn Hey. Opposite the Shamrock Hotel the car turned over with the passengers underneath. The three most severely injured were removed to the hospital. They are Alexandrina Matheson,. who sustained injuries to her back, spine and chest, but will probable recover ; Kathleen Moore, her niece, who is unconscious and suffering from slight concussion of the braiu, and Lay Ling, suffering from concussion of the brain, with scalp wound and general shock to the system. Oct. 28. Miss Matheson and Miss Moore are making good progress under the circumstances.
