■♦• Thursday 27th Sept. The meeting was attended by the Chief Commissioner (Mr Barron) and Messrs J. Mclntyre, A. Kinross and A. Baldey. On the recommendation of N. L. Faulkiner it was resolved to decline J. Hunters application to purchase part of section 5, block 1, Alton district. Mrs Margaret Hayes applied for a lease of section 14, block 7, Waikawa quarry reserve for grazing. — Declined. The Assistant Surveyor-General wrote stating that the Education Board propose to sell section 37, block 17, Invercargill Hundred, and asked if the sale should be assented to. — Recommended, accordingly. McKenzie and Sons applied for the right to cat timber on section 26, block 8, Winton Hundred, formerly held by P. Devereux. — Granted on payment of £3, timber to be cut out by 31st December next. G. L. Queale applied for right to cut remaining timber on section 8 and part of 9 to 14, block 8, New River Hundred, abandoned reserve area attached to s.m. area 182 — 650 acres. — Granted as a sawmill area with usual reserves. John McEwen and others, settlers at Brown's, petitioned that Jack's sawmill area, now cut out, be opened for settlement. — Commissioner and Mr King to inspect. The following applications for land were granted : — John Shepherd, l.i.p. section 8, block 2, Seaward Bush Township ; Mary Kelly, o.r.p. section 811, Hokonui ; John Corkhill, o.r.p. sections 154 and 155, block 7, Waiau. The following transfers were granted : — Section 5, block 7, Waiau-Merrivale, from R. W. R. Bradley to John W. Sharp ; sections 30 and 31, block 3, Seaward Bush Township, from Ernest Pope to Thomas Rodgers ; section 3, block 16, Longwood, from A. H. Gray to Gerald Fitzgerald ; section 1, block 3, Campbelltown, from W. B. Godfrey to Roderick McDonald ; sections 1 and 2, block 4, Waimatuku Township, from James L . Wilson to Alex. Stuart ; pastoral runs No. 415 d, Mararpa, and Nos. 156R, 143 a, 143 b, and 521, Wairaki, from N. G. Chalmers to Margaret McGregor Chalmers, of Montrose, Scotland. The transfer of section 722, Hokonui, from T. S. Nicol to Henry Gibbs was granted, subject to the ranger's report. The forfeiture of section 73, block 7, ! Invercargill Hundred, and section 26, block 3, Winton Hundred, was rescinded. Alex. McDonald applied for lease of section 19, block 3, Mataura, with right of cultivation.— Held over for three months. Mr W. Y. H. Hall, solicitor, attended in support of a petition of settlers at Orepuki who held land under " The Mining Districts Land Occupation Act, 1894." He .stated that men holding these mining licenses are subject to great disadvantages owing to the action of miners in breaking down fences, leaving gates open, and land taken up bjwater races, and their liability to loss of stock in water races. — Held over for a full meeting of the Board. The Assistant Surveyor-General forwarded a copy of Mr Matthew's (Chief Forester) report on sections 376 to 380, Forest Hill Hundred, which, inter alia, recommends that the sections be removed from the State Forest Act, and a similar area of open tussock land be reserved elsewhere for treeplanting. — Resolved that the Government be requested to remove the forest reservation from all sections south of the road at Lora stream. The Secretary of the Otago School Commissioners wrote re 150 acres Crown land on p.l. run 208, Wairaki, leased by the Otago School Commissioners, stating that the Commissioners have applied to the Government to have the area vested in the Commissioners as a reserve for primary educacational purposes. — Received. Mr W. Y. H. Hall, solicitor, forwarded a petition from holders of occupation licenses (Orepuki goldfields) requesting that when these licenses are brought under "The Mining District, Land Occupation Act, 1894," the rentals do not exceed 6d to 9d per acre on bush land, and Is 6d to 2s on open land — Held over. The Southland County Council wrote stating that it had no objection to the leasing of sections 33, block 3, Waikawa Quarry reserve provided the Council's right of entry for removal of stone, etc., is reserved. — The lease applied for by James Peterson — Applicant to be granted grazing license at 3s 6d per annum. Stronach Bros, and Morris wrote stating that they, do not desire to hold lease of section 34, Waimumu Hundred aDd adjoining land. — Eesolved that the land be re-classified as pastoral land and offered at Id per acre per annum for a term of 10 years." The Board then adjourned.
