Major Beddoes, with 400 of the Nigerian force and two guns, after a severe engagement east of Dompassi, completely routed 5000 Ashantis. The British casualties were 33 wounded, including Major Beddoes severely, and three other officers. Parliament paid sympathetic tributes to the late Duke of Coburg and adopted an address to the Queen. The Goodwood Cup was won by Mazagan ; Strongbow, 2 ; Jolly Tar, 3.
