The Italian commander at Taku announces receipt of a despatch Irom Sir Claude MacDoaald, dated 250h, in which he declares that the Ministers on the 20th declined the Tsung-li-Yamen's renewed suggestion that they should leave Pekin. M. Deoartier Demarchienne, Belgian Charge d' Affaires at Sbanghai, telegraphs a report that the Europeans had refused to enter the Imperial city fur protection. Washington, Aug. 2. Ihe Chicago Record publishes a message from Pekin, dated 21st July, announcing that all the Leg -tions except the British had been wrecked by shot and Bhell. Tbe British Legation, though still on the defensive, was muoh shattered. The position which the American marines still held near the city wall was of vital importance, inasmuch as it commanded the Legation. The American Guards, under Captain Meyers, sortied on the night of 3rd July and drove cfl' Kansu mounted troops, capturing many fltgs and rifles. Captain Meyers was mortally wounded. It was feared treachery would be possible when the Chinese who were defeated I at Tientsin entered the city.
