Hotel Change—The Club Hotel, Bluff, has ohanged hands, Mr Charles Sutherland (late of Gore) being the new proprietor. Kxtensive alterations and additions will be made to the already oommodious premises, and the new host will devote every attention to maintaining the good reputation the . bouse has earned during the past ten years. Highland Society's Social.—The annua sooial takes -plaoe in Ashley's Hall next Friday evening. Set addresses will be delivered by the Revs. J. A. Luxford and D. C. Bates. The Very Rev. Dean Burke, Rev. J. Gibson Smith, and Mr W. G. Mehaffey will also address the gathering. Mrs Blue, Miss Murray, and Messrs J. Porteous and J. Murray will contribute songs. A ball will follow, the musio for wbicb will be supplied by Mesdames Blue and Woods' band. The Certificated Engineer Question.— Yen ter day a petition protesting against the clause of a bill now before Parliament, providing that every engine over 5 h.p. shall be in charge of a certificated engineer, was despatched to Mr Hanan, M.H.R., for presentation to the House and his support. Tbe petition bore the signatures of 23 owners or drivers of gas engines —all in town, one would think —and set forth the reasons of the petitioners for objecting to the stipulation whioh is looked upon as entirely uncalled for, as an irritating Interference and as certain, if passed into law, to be detrimental to the manufactures and commerce of the oolony. Police Court.—At this court yesterday, before Mr S. E. McCarthy, S.M., John Allison, against whom there was a previous conviction within six months, was fined 10s for drunkenness, costs 2s. Arthur Graeme Haywood was charged with having stolen goods (as per list) to the value of £12 0s 6d, the property of Robert Gray, draper, on 4ch May last (the night of the fire in Dee street). Sergeant O'Neill said the aooused had only been arrested the day before and the police had not had time to investigate the oase. He applied for a remand for a week, whioh was granted, and bail was fixed at £100, accused £50 and one surety of £50. Mr Macalister appeared for accused. James Grant was brought up on a similar oharge, the value of the goods in his case being £14 Ids Bd, and remanded on the same oonditions. Responsibility of a Lunatic for Bodily Injury.—ln the Supreme Court, Auckland, Justice Conolly has delivered judgmenb in favour of plaintiff in the case Brennan v. Donaghy, in which a jury recently awarded £750 damages, as the result of a shooting oase at Oaehunga some months ago. As Donaghy was found to be a lunatic, the question now was Whether damages could be recovered from a lunatio for any aot of his. His Honour decided thab lunacy did not absolve defendant from liability to pay damages for hart or loss. He entered judgment for £750, with costs on the highest scale for plaintiff. Immigrants Gathering.— A meeting of bbo&e wbo landed at the Blufl from the ship Christian MoCausland is called for this afternoon in Millar's Temperance hotel, rhe vessel landed 336 paesenj-ers on the 29 uh August, 1875, and the meeting is for the purpose of arranging a social reunion to commemorate their silver wedding to the colony. The majority of them are still in Otago and Southland and although a quarter of a century has passed since they separated at Invercargil), a large number Bhould gather and a pleasant evening should be spent on the 29^h of the month, when it iB proposed that the gathering shall take place. The ship h»d an eventful voyage, and eighteen passengers died on the journey. The married people were also qu*ran^ned at the Bluff for a month. A number of them are farmers in this distriot and there should be a fair attendance at the meeting to-day, for there is a bond and claanishness abjut those who had common home on one of these old "wind-jammers" for three to fonr months that is unknown among passengers by the latter day ooean steamship. Gladstone. — The monthly meeting of the Borough Council, held on Thursday night, was attended by Mr A. F. Hawks (Mayor), Councillors Wilson, Cooper, Bath, Small and Curtis. Mr Ross was granted leave to transfer his lease of sections 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, endowment, to Mr C. R. Edmunds. The contractor hiving abandoned the footpaths contract, that of Mr Maher was aeoepted, provided he commences on Monday. The Mayor was authorised to enquire upon what grounds the Invercargill Council placed Gladstone as one of the contributories to the Avenal drain. The engineer furnished plans and specific itions for the North road drain to Kelvin road; the cost being unexpectedly heavy the matter was ordered to stand over until next meeting. The inspeator was ordered to give notioe to several ratepayers to cut trees overhanging footways. Long Lived Tasmanians.— A case of extreme longevity is reported from Abbotsham, on tbe north-west coast of Tasmania. Mr John Snith, who died there in the second week of July, was born in Spita!fielde, London, on September 14th, 1790, and consequently had reached his 110 h year. He arrived in the oolony in 1812, and was engaged in business as wheelwright in various parts of the island. He was quite well and hearty till within three days of death, eating heartily, and enjoying bis pipe. Ann Gateland, who died ac Launceston the following week, was the oldest cativebsrn Tasmanian at time of death. She was born in Hobart in 1804, and hei eldest s?n died last Christmas, aged 72. Her father wa? attached to one of the Imperial regiments at Hobart in the early days. Fresh Blood.— Mr J. Davies, lately representative of the Massey-Harris Co., but now farming at MaUura,arrived on Thursday from Melbourne with a handsome black entire colt by Prince of Albyn, dam by Champion of the north, g.d. by Eclipse, and descended from the be&t strain of blood in the Australasian colonic*, including Mackintosh's Prinoe Charlie. Those who have seen the colt describe him as- being the makings of something above the average : and now that the question of breeding horse' sui able for remounts is likely to receive more attention than has hitherto been accorded it, the services of an animal, such a; the one under notice, will doubtless be ir request. Mr Davies has named his horse -■ Hector MacDjn»ld," in honour of tht gallant soldier of that name.
