LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
Wellington, Thoraday, Aug. 2. To-day bhe Weights and Measures Act Amendment Bill was considered in committee and was amended by the fixing of the minimum fees a.d penalty under the Act, and by striking out a clause under which an inspector waa rendered not liable for accidental damage. The Education Board's Election Bill was amended in the dir ction of allowing candidates to appoint scrutineers. THE WORKERS COMPENSATION FJR ACCIDENTS BILL was further considered in committee. The Hon. D. Pinkerton moved to include " agricultural " in the list of employments to which the bi'.l applied, but this was negatived by 20 votes to 12. In Clause 15 the Hon. G. McLean moved to strike out the proviso that in cues where bhe principal may be liable his liability is to be presumed until the contrary is shown. On a division the amendment was lost on the casting vote of the Speaker. In Clause 18 Colonel Pitt moved to strike out the subjection which makes the claim of a workman on a mine, vessel, etc , superior to existing or subsequent encumbrances howsoever created. Lost by 18 votes to 14 The remaining clauses of the bill were passed without amendment, but the schedules were not considered.
