The Queen received the news with remarkable calmness and fortitude. Universal sorrow and sympathy are expressed for Her Majesty. Shares and debentures — Bank of Australasia, £75 ; Bank of New South Wales, £41 ; Union Bank, ,£36 10s ;National Bank of New Zealand, £3; Bank of New Zealand, _ per cent, guaranteed stock, 101 ; N.Z. Loan and M.A. Co.'s "4 per cent, debentures, 91. At the tallow sales: 1775 casks were offered and 1225 sold. Mutton, fine, 27s 9d ; medium, 26s 6d ; beef, fine, 27s ; medium, 265. Silver, 2s 4d per oz.
