San Francisco, July 11. The Boxer uprising in China and reported slaughter of foreign legations in Pekin caused great excitement in this country, superseding in public attention almost all other subjects. It has been impossible, even for the Government, to learn the exact state of affairs, bnt enough it known to fill the cation with dread and apprehension of war with China. It has been charged that America failed to assist/ in the bombardment of the Taku forts. The American admiral explains that he refrained because he feared harsh measures at that stage, and in the oondftion then existing would only serve to nnite the Boxers and Chinese troops in a common cause against foreign troops. His coarse has since been approved by popular opinion in view of the conditions and events which followed the Taku bombardment. London, July 7. The disturbances in the Far East have canßed several Chinese banks to snspend payment, European firms withholding advances. The secretary of the Back of Eogland says the stoppage of payment by Chinese banks woald prove far reaching in its consequences, and was hindering imports and stimulating the export trade. It will increase she demand for silver.
