Riverton Regatta

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) The regatta held for many years on Boxing Day on the estuary of the Aparima was on this occasion favoured by fine weather and, in consequence, by a large attendance. The entries were fairly numerous and the races were mostly well contested. The tide did not altogether suit as tbe sailing races bad to be run below the bridge, and our little town does not look its best at low water. The train from Invercargill'was deplorably late and this caused coma de'ay in getting away the competitors for the first race— a loss of time that naturally could never be made np—but little time was lost. The results of the events follow :—

Boys’ Pair-oared Race—l, A. Millar and R. McLachlan (cox, P. Mills); 2, G. Beer •nd f. Bailey (cox, Baxter); 3, A. Hancock and Hunter (cox, A. Beer). Maiden Doable Sculls*-!, J. Watson and Knowler; 2, P. Beer and J. Beer; 3, C. Boniface and B. Beer.

Dingey Sailing Race (14 feet boats)— Stirling’s Rangitira won easily from the Mirth and Ripple. youths’ Pair-oared Race—l, W. Boniface and Traill; 2, S. Beer and O. Boniface; 3, T. Bailey and H- O'Reilly. Men’s Outrigged Pairs—l, Invercargill Rowing Club (McPherson and Dick); 2, Invercargill Rowing Clnb (McKenzie and Robertson); 3, Invercargill Rowing Club (D. Martin and Basstian). Handicap Dingy Race—l, C. Boniface, 80 secs; 2, F. Green, 75 secs ; 3, W. Boniface, 70 sec?. H. Boniface (scr) broke a scull when looking all over a winner. Handicap Sailing Race—Hart’s Why Not • won easily. Senior Outrigged Fours—l, Invercargill Railway (McPherson’s crew); 2, Invercargill Rowing Club. Men’s Pair-oared Race—l, J. Walton and Knowler; 2, P. Beer and T. Bullman; 3, H. and W. Beer.

Junior Fours—l, Bluff; 2, Invercargill R.C.; 3, Invercargill Bailway Club. On their form I ehoald say ttab the Bluff crew was the best. The Railway row strong, but hang in the air and lose a lot of grip at the beginning; with good coaching they would be hard to beat, but their fault is a bad one.

It was a most enjoyable day with no unpleasantries.
