Deal in Cattle.—A special train of 29 trucks passed through town last night for AUanton with a draft of fat bullocks, sold by Mr F. A. Price to a Taieri speculator at £7 per head. Market Reserve. —Messrs McKay Bros offered the leases in the Market Reserve at auction yesterdiy. Lots A and B, section 8, were knocked down to Hon. J. G. Ward at £l2 10s each. Lot C was m t sold.

Good Price. —The National Mortgage Co report the sain fo- fifty guineas, on account of Messrs Holder and AwJry, Redcliffe station, to Mr E. Gat s of Koronrko of the Cheviot ram hogget .which took second p ize at the show on Wednesday. The purchaser had the choice cf the first and second prizetakers, and preferred the litter. Mr Gates is taking the sheep to Ashburton.

Prime Southland —Messis M. Carr and Co. have been appointed agents for Mr A L. Joseph, frezeu meat exporter, who ships under his own brand and gives special prominence in the London market to all first quality meat from this district by marking it “ Prime Southland.” Presentation. —Ou Thursday night Mr A. A. Troup, who is leaving for the North, was the recipient of a purse of sovereigns from the local ironmongers, and particularly his late fellow employes tn the firm of Messrs B. Small, and Co Mr M. Thompson, who was spokesmen, said they legrett.d that the state of Mr Troup’s health made the change neceetary. Mr Troup briefly and feelingly returned thanks for the substantial present. S.M. Court.—Judgment was given yesterday for plaintiff by J. W. Boynton, S M., in the Southland Frozm Meat Co. v. John Hogan (Wrey’s Bu»h) for £l2 lOi ; costs £2 2s 63. In the previously heard case J as. Lillioo and others v. Jas. Dalziel and Thoe. Walkar, for £132 18s 53, judgment was given for defendants without costs. —Mr H. A. Macdonald for plaintiffs, Mr J. Macalister for defendants. Girls’ High School.—ln connection with the break-up of the High Schools on Wednesday night no mention was made of the show of needlework made by the sewing class of the girls’ school. When the distribution of prizes was over the ladies who were present examined a display of faicy work—“ Montmellick and “ drawn thread” and other myst.rious ttvnes attached to it—and the general verdict was that the qual ty of the labour wes excellent. The sewing class is a voluntary class and does not count a large number of pupils. The quantity of work wa», therefore, not large, but the taste and workmanship were pronounce! very good. The novelty of the exhibition was some lace work and this attracted unusual attention. The display as a whole was exceedingly meditable to the industry of the pupils and maiifested the skilful tuit'oa of the mistresses, Miss Billing for the fancy sewing and Miss Ishorwood for the plain. The name of Miss C. Pilcher who secured a prize in the sewing class was omitted from the priz! list published on Thursday ; and among the successful pupils on the boys’ side should have beenmentioned Master R. G. Mac Gibbon whs was awarded a prize for progress and general good conduct.

Southland Racing Club.—ln the nominations published jesterday several errors occurred. For the harness trot Sou’wester was printed Sinister, and Monitor Pry instead of Mauton (pony). In the harness trot Kiernst should have read Kilrush, and Weld should have been Weed.

New Year Symbols.—Mr J. S. Baxter has this year struck quite a new idea in the line of Chritma3 presents for customers. He has imported a large number of high class photographs mounted and framed with taste. The views, which embrace such scenes as the Tower Bridge, Thames Embankment, St. Paul’s Cathedral, etc., make handsome pictures 13in. x Ilin, They should be appreciated by Mr Baxter’s customers.—The Liverpool and London and Globe Insurance Company (Messrs Thomas Brodrick and Co., agents) have sent a copy of their annual date table to this office. The design is artistic, and is made up of coloured landscape views of Liverpool and London. East Invercargill.—At the monthly, meeting of the Borough Council the Mayorelect, Mr J. A. Mitchell, was appointed delegate to the half-holiday meeting.—The Works Committee’s ' recommendation that two chains of drain in St. Andrew street be replaced by two feet pipes was adopted.— W. G. Mackay was appointed valuer for the year 1900, anti the inspector was instructed to keep the streets clear of cattle by night and day.

Waianiwa Sports.—The annual athletic gathering will be held in Mr T. Wihou’s paddock on the 28ch inst. The programme includes tilting at the ring and bicycle races.

Church Bazaab,—A bazaar in aid of the Church of England Building Fund was opened at the Bluff on Wednesday evening, the Hon. J. G. Ward performing the opening ceremony, and will be continued tili this evening. The bazaar has a number of attractions, amongst others being a grand march by about 30 ladies and gentlemen, a fairy dance by the children, and the operetta “ Bluebea-d.” The stalls are in the capable hands of Mesdames Nichol, Poynter, Bertrand, Moody, Jones, Neville, an>i Waddel, and the Misses Warren, Nichol, and Beitrand ; tea kiosk, Mrs Roberts ; fortune telling, Mrs Wheeler. There were good attendances of the publio upon each of the evenings. Christmas Supplement —The Evening Star Christmas number, a copy of which has been sent to this office, contains a large amount of matterboth of general interest and and of special interest at the hour. There is eg. an article on the general elections with photographs and bief biographical notices of the Otago and Southland members. There are also illustrations, with explanatory letterpress, of the educational inatitutims, churches, and other notable buildings of Dunedin. That inexhaustible topic, gold dredging, provides a well illustrated article. There are a numof short stories, and mention must be made of a capital descriptive artie’e “ P.ctureeque Otigo,” with handsome illustrations. The publication should meet with the favour of those who are connected with Otago and Southland.

Buckingham will visit country centres on dates advertised in another cilutnn to lecture oi the “ Human Voice : its use and abuse.” Under this subject such branches of the art of singing as bieathiig, attack, fitxibility. resonance, and pitch will be dealt with. A concert programme will be given at each lecture, and at the conclusion those who desire to have their voices tested by Mr Buckingham will be given the opportunity. “My Lady Anti-Nicotine.” —ln an Auckland divorce case Theodore Percy Arnold against his wife there was no appearance of the respondent. Petitioner st»ted that he was a B.A. of Oxford University, formerly junior master at High School, Christchurch, and now a fanner at Hok'anga. Respondent was the daughter of a smgeon in the Indian army. In 1886 petitioner was a teacher in the Taranaki district, and in that year resprndenb left him, as she said she objected to live in a small country place, and preferred town. Two years later she wrote a letter to petitioner giving the reasons for her desertion. The principal ground was that petitioner in iated upon smoking, when she strongly objected to it. She cons’dered that a man who smoked was worse than a drunkard, and she koked upon tobacco as a worse drug than opium, its effects on persons who took it b i g far worse. Another reason she gave for leaving him was that he spent too much money on botanical excursions, The Court dissolved the distasteful union. Cricket. —I C.O. XI v. H Bsrry. —Mr Macalister for plaintiff, Mr Hall for defendant —Plaintiff, a caipsnter, sought to recover £27, balance due on a contract for shifting a home and stable. The defendant denied that the work had been satisfactorily done, and plaintiff contended that, putting on ridging, noshing chimneys, and putting in cvp'ioaids was not in his contract.
