Mr Chamberlain has assured Mr Henniker Heaton that in view of the fact that the special session of Parliament is to deal with the Transvaal question, it would be contrary to precedent to submit the Australian Commonwealth Bill to the House during that session. There will not be the slightest difficulty,, however, in passing it early in 1900, unless the bill raises questions of Imperial concern. At the Police Department enquiry further sensational evidence was given. A witness said he suspected a man employed by a local butcher of committing the Gatton murders, and mentioned his suspicions to the detectives, who told him to “ shut up” as the man was innocent. The witness saw 50 or 60 blood splashes on the man’s jumper, which could not be accounted for by carrying meat. Another witness said he saw the same man ab night, near the spot just prior to the murders. A constable, in evidence, accused the detectives of screening this man. MELBOURNE, Oct. 5. Received sth, 6.14 p.m. Cape Nelson lighthouse reports that the steamer Regina (sic), from Mauritius to Newcastle, signalled that she passed the steamer Asloun, with the s s. Waikato in tow. They expected to reach Fremantle on the 7th inst. HOBART, Oct. 5. Received Sth, 0 52 a.m. The Assembly adopted the report of a select committee in connection with

the Strahan Marine Board enquiry over which Captain Miles resigned. The debate is proceeding.

The Bank of New South Wales has commenced an action against the Governor and others in regard to L 5700 advanced on overdraft to the Australia Hotel, Limited, Coolgardie, the defendants being guarantors. The defence is that the bank negligently realised the security, and that assets worth L 15,000 were sold for L2OOO. Evidence showed a letter, written by the Governor, eulogising the undertaking being sent to England to assist the sale of the company’s shares. Prospector Simmons, who discovered a 168 oz nugget near Kurnalpie recently found a 109 oz one in the same district.
