School Committee Elections
Monday, 24th April. ■WINTON. There was a record attendance of about 120 at the meeting of householders. Messrs R. Wilson and H. Taylor moved that Mr Moore, chairman of retiring committee, take the chair, which was opposed by the Rev. M. W. Bui terfield and one or two others, but the meeting ruled with usage and IMr Moore was elected. The report testified to the state of proficiency the school was in through the efforts of the teaching staff, headed by Mr Wyllie, and mentioned the fact that; of j the 151 present at last examination 144 passed. Reference was also made to the committee having declined the use of the school for giving religious instruelion to the children. The report was accompanied by a statement of receipts and expenditure, which showed a small credit balance. Mr Butterfield moved, seconded by Mr Blackmore : “ Thai this me- t'n? of householders thanks the committee lor the good work of the past year, but expresses the opinion thattherefusalof the use of a room for religious instruction purposes was nob in the best interests of the school and urges the incoming committee to grant any religious teachers applying for it the reasonable facilities 'allowed by the Act.” The mover spoke at length in support of his motion and was replied to I y Mr Russell. Mr James Welsh moved as an amendment, seconded by Mr Castle, that the report of the committee as read be approved. The amendment was declared carried by 55 to 15. Eleven candidates being nominated a ballot was taken when 105 householders voted with the following result. C. D. Moore (chairman), James Watson, Robert Wilson, Hugh Taylor, William Russell (secretary and treasurer) J. F. White, Thos. Ritchie.
Little else has been talked of for the last few days except the coming struggle. Many even outside the district were watching for the result and congratulations are now coming in even from outsiders.—Own correspondent.
Waihopai.—The balance sheet showed a ’ small credit after providing for all liabilities. The following were elected : —Messrs McKillop (chairman), McLean (secretary), Newman, Bhaw, Hawson, Stone and McChesney. Wallacetown, —Messrs W. E. Carter (chairman), Alex. Gray, J. Carroll, G- S. Brown, J. Stevens, A, Fraser, D. Scott (secretary and treasurer) are the new committee. Lumsden.—Little interest was taken in the election, only a few more than the retiring committee being present. The balance sheet showed a substantial sum for the incoming committee, who are Messrs A. Small (chairman), M. Maley (secretary), Fraser, Kenning, Kirkland, Macalister, Perrin. Gobe —The new committeeareMessrs Wait (chairman), Turnbull (secretary), Martin, Bust, Marshall, and Stevens. East Gobe.—Messrs J. Mac Gibbon (chairman), H. Grey, W. Boyne (secretary), A. Aitken, A. Watt, J. W. Dun, and J. Latham are the committee for the year. Fobtbose. —Only the members of the old committee were present, and they were reelected. They have a credit balance of £2 to begin the year with. The names are— Messrs H. Chisholm (chairman), J. Chisholm, J. Anderson, H. T. Middleton, W. Dawson, and J. P. Maloney (secretary). Matauba.—Votes of thanks were accorded to the retiring committee and the head teacher and staff. The balance sheet showed receipts, £59 12s 7Jd; expenditure, L 42 10a lid. The following are the new aommittee: —Messrs Winning, Baineaves (secretary and treasurer), Barclay, Clark, R. Dickie (chairman), Galt, Lowden, MacGregor, and Park. Ryal Bush.—The retiring committee were re-elected, viz. : Messrs Baldey (chairman), James Blakie, Peter Blakie, William James (secretary), Thos. Murray, John Pert, and Joseph Wakeling. Waianiwa.—About fifteen householders attended, Mr R. Donnelly in the chair. The account of receipts and expenditure showed a small credit balance. The committee elected are—Messrs R. Donnelly (chairman), W. Weir, A. McLean, P. McDermid, T. Wilson, R. Murray, F. Boyd (secretary and treasurer). Obepuki.—The meeting was attended by 21 householders. ;The balance sheet showed a balance in hand of £l5 10’. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the outgoing committee. The new committee are Messrs A. M. Dawson (chairman), J. Forbes (secretary), Jas. Adamson, T. Johnston, J. Butler, Jas. Fortune, and C. Reichel. West Plains.—No interest was taken in the election, only six householders being present. The following were elected: — Messrs G. Young (chairman), J. M. Fowler (secretary), Thos. Holland, B. Mullan, J. Canagh and J. Macpherson. Campbelltown. About 25 householders were present, and the following committee was elected : — Messrs J. King, J. Walker, D. McDougall, R. F. Dawson (chairman.’, McKenzie, Bailey, J. Hunter (secretary), j. Hewlett and East,
■ Heddon Bush.— Only the chairman of the committee put in an appearance, the meeting consequently lapsed. Dipton.— Only the required number for a Bohool committee turned up at the meeting thereby saving a ballot. Tho committee are Rev. W. W. Brown (chairman), Messrs A. Miller, J. McDonald, G. Conley, R. Ross, W. Wall and J. Bell.
