It is estimated that the engineers who participated in the strike have lost two million sterling in wages, while the funds of the Amalgamated Engineers’ Society have been depleted to the extent of L 600,000. The presence of so many war and other ships in Chinese waters, and the shutting down of the Japanese mines against all foreign vessels, have caused a heavy demand and increase in the price of local coal. Several vessels lying at Newcastle have received orders to load for the East.
The Presbyterian Mission Board has contracted with Messrs Burns and Philp for a regular steamer service with the New Hebrides mission stations, guaranteeing a minimum of freight and passage mosey of Ll2OO per annum. A message, purporting to be from the Governor-General of the Philippine Islands, has reached Sydney that the principal leaders of the rebels have laid down their arms and sworn allegiance to Spain. It is further stated that the Spanish Government offered the rebel leader 1,700,000 dollars to terminate the dispute. The oBer was at first declined but subsequently accepted. A number of cattle covered with tick,said to be identical with the Queensland parasite, have been discovered at Fremantle.
