It has been known for many years that the Waiau River and most of its tributaries arc rich in gold. Miners working on the banks, with only rough appliances are now, and have for years, been making good wages. Diggers’ Creek and Taylor’s Creek, for instance, which empty into the river at the head of the Belmont claim, have both proved exceptionally rich in their alluvial workings. That no dredge has hitherto been placed on the Waiau is mainly due to the difficulty, or almost the i of carrying the heavy machinerv necessary on to the ground. It is only last year that a good road was formed from Otautau, so that this difficulty is now removed. This fact, together with the vast improvements made in the last two or three years in dredging appliances, render the present a most opportune time for commencing the dredging industry on the Waiau. The gold and wash may be inspected during office hours at the Mr Caleb Froggatt, Esk street, Invercargill.
