The Delayed Mail.—The English mails via San Francisco will arrive by to-day’s express and the usual delivery of correspondence will be made at the post office between the hours of 7 and 8 p.m. Shorthand. — Countrj’ residents and others wishing to avail themselves of shorthand tuition, have now an opportunity offered to them, Mr Lowrie having decided to commence a class on Saturday at specially reduced rates for those who find it inconvenient to otherwise attend. Ominous. —The schooner Lizzie Ellen, which was built on the Mataura some years ago and is owned by Timpany Brothers, is now 34 days out from Timaru to Bluff and has not been seen on the coast during that period. The vessel was Rooming south to load timber and was ballasted with Timaru shingle, which is about as safe as a cargo of loose marbles and should only be carried as ballast in sacks. Her crew are Daniel Keys, master, J. Cunningham, H. Burgess and William Mills, a boy (son of the late Capt. Mills, of Timaru.) Captain Hanning was in charge of the craft but recently left her.

Education Knocked out by the Bike.— Two teachers in one of our town schools have been touring the colony during the recent vacation and neither has returned to work yet. Cause—“bikes.” In granting them leave of absence some members of the Board indulged in a little mild sarcasm. In one case the absentee met with an accident through losing control of the machine ; in the other it is surmised that the bike proved the stronger. It looks all very nice and roseate to meditate on a five weeks’ scorch through the country but some recent local experiences prove that there is all the difference possible between an afternoon’s spin and a day-to-day grind.

Chamber of Commerce.—The meeting of the Chamber yesterday afternoon was attended by Messrs J. E. Watson (chairman), G. W. Nichol, A. F. Hawke, R. Dunlop, J. Manson, and R. Gilmour. Mr W. D. A communication was received from the Chamber of Commerce, Sydney, relative to the Congress of Chambers to take place there in April and inviting the local institution to send delegates. It was resolved that the secretary write to the Dr,n, edin Chamber enquiring whether they ar® sending a delegate and if so that he be requested to act for the Invercargill Chamber also. Mr R. Dunlop thanked the a members for the confidence they had displayed in him in again electing him their representative on the Bluff Harbour Board. He was gratified to think that he had the support of the majority of the members, especially as great interest had been taken in the present elections ; he had done his best to let light into Harbour Board matters. Qn the motion of Mr Hawke a vote of thanks was passed to ■Mr Dunlopfor the conscientious and straightforward manner in which he had acted during his membership of the Bluff Harbour Board. The meeting then adjourned.

Industrial Settlements and Cooperative Labour.—The Hon. W. _M. Bold, M.L.C., gave a lecture on. this subject in the Town Hall, Gore, on Thursday evening to a limited but appreciative audience. The Mayor presided and at the conclusion a vote of thanks was passed to the hon gentleman. The lecture Mr Bolt stated was composed before some recent literature from .England on the subject had been received that confirmed his views and which those conversant with the subject regarded as an elaboration of General Booth’s plans.—Own correspondent.
