(Per Press association). AUCKLAND, Feb. 5. Captain J. A. Bewick, who was in the Island and intercolonial trade for nearly thirty i years, met with a fatal accident today. His steamer Scotsman fouled a yacht moored in the harbour and the latter’s bowsprit caught Bewick in the side, hurling him overboard. He expired shortly after he was picked up. Thomas T. Clarkson, of the Whirl Tere Club, Invercargill, half-mile champion of New Zealand, lowered the one mile grass record on the Auckland domain last night, putting up the fast time of 2 min. 26 secs. The previous record of 2 min. 27 4-sths secs, was held by E. Reynolds, the amateur. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 5. J. M. Maxwell, manager of the Zealandia soap and candle works, was instantaneously killed to-day by a cask of tallow, weighing 5 cwt, falling on him. NAPIER, Fed. 5. Nelson Bros, received the following cable from London this morning :— “ To-day’s quotations : Best Canterbury mutton, 3§d ; beet Dunedin, 2-Jd ; best Napier and North Island, 2|d. Frozen maat market still very depressed.” • WELLINGTON, Feb. 5.
Under the Factories Act, Jones and Ashdown, tailors, were charged with having employed in their factory four famales after the hour of 9 p.m., the defendants having a permit to allow certain of their employes to work overtime till 9 p.m, they were fined L 5 and costs. A despatch from Mr Chamberlain states that he is prepared to advise the Queen to confer the distinction of “ Royal ” upon the N.Z. order for bravery, if, after a number of years’ working, it proved a success. A swagger named Rudd committed suicide in a waterhole near Pirini, Lower Valley. Mr S. Brown, President of the local Industrial Association, at the request of the Government, is communicating with similar associations in large centres, in regard to the appointment of Commissioners for the Brisbane Exhibition and the sending of exhibits. The Mines Department propose to obtain a report from an expert on the question of the conservation of water in Otago and West Coast districts, in the former for mining and irrigation purposes. DUNEDIN, Feb. 5.
At the Board of Conciliation to-day the Pregident stated that there was a chance of a settlement being arrived at of the dispute between the Seamen’s Union and the employers, and an adjournment was made till Monday.
