Lumsden Caledonian Society

(from oub own correspondent.) The twelfth annual sports of this society took place on Wednesday in Mr H. Small's paddock. The weather for days previous had been very dry and hot, but on the morning of the sports Lumsden was visited by a storm of thunder and rain. About 10 o’clock however, the sky cleared and a fine , day followed, except that a strong wind blew from the north-west. The rain while having ' the effect of reducing the attendance, improved the ground for the competitors to a very appreciable extent. About 200 were present, amongst whom the fair sex were prominent. The sport was excellent, the leaping and hammer and stone throwing being the best'ever seen here. The racing - events were well contested for the shorter distances and the finishes very close showing how well the handicappers had gauged the merits of the competitors. In the mile and half mile Andrew Small, jnr., who made his first appearance as a competitor in a public gathering won easily and surprised a good many by ' his performance. Millar, who on two previous occasions won the mile race here had to drop out when about half way through. Mr Maley made an excellent secretary and under his direction the grounds had been prepared in such a manner as to call forth remarks of satisfaction from several competitors from a distance. The officers worked well and assiduously, and everything went without a hitch. lam told the gathering was financially a success also, and that there will be a few pounds of a surplus, the dance in the evening assisting in this direction.
