Boat Accidents : A Marine Drowned.

[By Telegraph.] Wellington, Feb. 4. Boats fromH.M. ships now in port have been engaged in sailing races. This afternoon cutters from the Orlando, Lizard, and Wallaroo competed for Lady Brassey’s cup. A strong northerly wind was blowing, and off Point Jermingham two of the boats cap- - sized, and Robinson, a marine belonging to the Lizard, was drowned. The boats which capsized were the Lizard’s cutter and gig. Going round a buoy a sea caught the cutter on the lee side, and before she could right herself another struck and swamped her. The gig attempted to go to the rescue bub was swamped as well and sank. The men endeavoured to hold on to the boats but they turned over and the majority supported themselves on oars, water breakers, and anything that was floating. The Wallaroo’s galley picked most of them up and though the other boats helped the men say that but for her more must have been drowned. She washamperedin her movements by having wash boards fixed along the sides, these preventing the use of oars. Robinson was unable to hold on and had disappeared before assistance reached him.
