AUCKLAND, Feb. 3.
At the Takapuna races the Cup was won by Antares ; Fabulist, 2 ; Nestor, 3. In the Stewards’ Handicap, Bert Castleton, who rode Lufra, was thrown and killed, the other horses galloping over him. WELLINGTON, Feb. 3.
A motion to remove from the file the petition against the return of Mr W. C. Buchanan for Wairarapa electorate, was before the Chief Justice this morning. The grounds are that it was not lodged within the prescribed time, and that security as set down in the Act was not given. After brief argument on the point of calling the Returning Officer, who had filed an affidavit that the 11th December, the date appearing to the declaration of the poll was wrong and should have been the 12th, it was agreed that further argument be adjourned until Saturday next, when Justice Conolly will be present. On Saturday a settler named Burdon, of Watershed Bay, Hunterville, was drowned in crossing the Rangitikei river. The Frisco mail is expected to reach here by special trail at 5 o’clock to-morrow and the Mararoa will be detained to carry the southern portion to Lyttelton. Major Sommervile, chairman of the N.Z. Rifle Association, wires from Auckland thab he will have to abandon the range at Takapuna first selected, the late heavy rain having filled the basin with water. He intends to look for a new site to-morrow and warns .competitors hot to leave home too eaily, but to await further announcement. The Mahinapua having grounded in the Manukau the Frisco mail will not reach New Plymouth until about 9 o’clock tomorrow morning. The mail will come through by a special train, and the steamer will be delayed till it arrives. On the Wellington-Masterton railway today an engine and four trucks were derailed at Kaitoke owing to points not being properly fixed. No damage was done.
