[By Telegraph.] Christchurch, Jan. 2. Yesterday’s game between Gifford and Barnes resulted in a draw, and Hookham resigned to Mellor on the 53rd move. This morning Anderson badly defended the Ruy Lopez opening with Barnes and the latter won in a little over an hour’s play. Hookman declined the King’s Gambit, played by Pleasants, and the former getting into difficulties resigned on the 17th move. A closely contested game took place between Cocks and Edwards, but the former got a pawn passed which should give him a win. Gifford and Mellor and Grierson and Mason had up to the luncheon adjournment played even games. Jan. 3. In the seventh round Pleasants beat Hookham, Barnes beat Anderson, Mellor beat Gifford, Mason beat Edwards, Meldrum a bye. Cocks is leading, having won five and lost one game.
