(Pbb Press association). DUNEDIN, Dec. 31. Mining dividends declared : Golden Gate Dredging Co., 2s 6d-per share; Golden Treasure Co., 2s; Otago Gold Dredging Co., Is. At an inquest on the body of the boy George Clearwater the evidenca showed that he was riding one horse and leading a young one. They appear to have taken fright and bolted. Nothing has been heard of the escaped prisoner Simpson, but the police are confident he is still about the bush. Jan. 1. New Year’s Eve passed off fairly quiet, the cold weather no doubt accounting for the number in the streets being somewhat less than usual. The weather to-day was fine though the wind was still somewhat cold. The principal attraction in town was the Caledonian Society’s sports. In wrestling Powley was first in both Cornish and Border styles, with Skinner second in the former and Dickson in the latter. The mile distance of the President’s test bicycle race was won by W. B. Bell (scr.), G. R. Maxwell (10yds) 2. Time—2 min. 22 l-sth secs. R. Scott (100yds) won the 5 mile bicycle race, with Ralston (scr) 2. Time—l 4 min. 31J secs. S. Minn (75yds) won the two mile second-class bicycle race, with R. Scott (20yds) second. Time—s min. 26 secs. The mile running ev<nt was won by W. Walker (75yds), N. Binnie (95yds) 2. Time—4 min. 46J secs. Councillor A. Morrison died very. suddenly of apoplexy on Thursday.
