(Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, July 29. At an inquest on the body of John Cromwell, who committed suicide by exploding dynamite in his mouth, a verdict of temporary insanity was returned. The evidence disclosed no motive for the act. WELLINGTON, July 20. Messrs Rodgers and Gallet perfumers, Paris, state that the substance found on ths Taranaki beach some time ago by G. Beckett and Ainsley, and sent to France is ambergris. Beckett states that the weight was about 481 b and he estimates its value to be at least L3OOO. The Timber Conference to-day discussed the reports of the committees. The first reported that a close season for cutting timber was impracticable and a system of ringing the trees would be costly and injurious. The expert committee’s report laid special stress on the necessity for seasoning timber before sale. Both reports were adopted. DUNEDIN, July 20. At the annual meeting of the Duuedin Gold-dredging Co. the report stated that the river had kept high during the year, interfering with operations. Gold to the value of L 2951 had been got, of which L 435 had* been paid in dividends and L 1062 as wages. Thirteen entries (one more than last year) have been received for the sixth annual Brass Bands contest to be held here in October. The following bands have sent in their names Wellington Garrison, Christchurch Garrison, Stanmore (Christchurch), Oamaru Garrison, Invercargill Garrison, Tirnaru Garrison, Waimate, Invercargill City, Dunedin Navals, Kaikorai, Dunedin Engineers Dunedin Citizens, and Dunedin Garrison’ For the solo contests there are over 70 entries.
