Hauraki North (Coromandel) stone, from eight inches of rubble in a leader recently cut, yielded as assay results—gold : 418ozs 2dwts 14grs; silver, 1760zs Bdwts per ton. The total value of the bullion is L 1771 10s. The Welcome Kind mine, Coromandel, crushed 1001 b of specimens for 1760zs of gold, worth L 3 per oz. The Crown mines, Karangahake, crushed 472 tons of ore for L 2225 bullion, a marked increase on last return. WELLINGTON, July 17. In reply to the Lyttelton Board, asking that concerted action be taken by the Harbour Boards of NowZealonl to obtain, by legislation, an extension of their powers to license tugs and masters, the local Board has decided to assist in the direction indicated. Over fifty members of the bar assembled to welcome Mr Edwards on his resumption of a seat on the judicial bench. Mr Travers, on their behalf, greeted the new Judge, who replied briefly, saying he could not hope to fill Judge Richmond’s place, but he would do his best to deserve the commendation of both suitors and the bar. CHRISTCHURCH, July 18. At a meeting of dairymen resolutions were carried that the proposals made by the City Council in regard to the inspection of dairies and dairy cattle are calculated to unneces sarily harass 'and annoy owners. The proper course would be to place the inspection in the hands of the respective Boards of Health. In the event of the City Council proceeding with its proposals it was resolved to petition the Governor-in-Council not to accede thereto. At the sale of the Horsley Downs Estate 1675 acres sold at L2 2s 6d ; 339 at L2 17s; 107 at L2 15s ; the homestead block was withdrawn at L 5 15s. John Graham, an old Canterbury settler, aged 72, was found drowned in a creek near his residence, Southbridge, this morning. He is supposed to have fallen from a plank while crossing the creek and been stunned and drowned. DUNEDIN, July 18. The Otago A. and P. Association has passed a resolution asking the Minister of Railways to make a uniform rate for tho carriage of frozen meat on the railways and that he take into consideration the advisableness of materially reducing the present rates.
