The opinion that General Baratieri would be acquitted has been confirmed. In delivering judgment the court deplored the fact that he had proved an incapable leader. Fifty sailors belonging to a Japanese warship at Antwerp broke out in mutiny and left the ship. They had an encounter with the police, but eventually had to return on board. Many of them were injured. Many supporters of the Cuban insurgents have exploded bombs in Havana. Jcne 16.

At Dr Jameson's trial Sir Edward Clark said it was doubtful if the Foreign Enlistment Act was operative in Maftking and certainly it did not apply to Pitsam (sic). Dr Jameson admitted that he himself was solely responsible for the raid. Replying to a question in the House of Lords Lord Salisbury said he must refuse to open a parliamentary inquiry into the entrance of Jameson's party iuto the Transvaal until the verdict of a court was delivered.
