WELLINGTON, April 1

T. G. Thompson, commission agent, at tempted suicide this afternoon. He returned home the worse of drink, quarreled with his vife, and swallowed a large dose of opium in her presence. Remedies were applied, and he was removed to the hospital. The Advances to Settlers Board yesterday approved of loans to the amount of L15.480. Sir J. Hector has been elected a Fellow of Trinity College, London. A body, evidently that of a labouring man about 45 years of age, was found floating in the harbour this morning. The features were anrecognisable. At the Benevolent Trustees meeting a discussion took place on the Rev. Mr Evans' report. The chairman disclaimed the accusation, of want of inquiry into cases ; assistance was never granted without the strictest investigation. As to the charges of help being given to people who did not deserve it, there was not a Detter officer in New Zealand than their secretary. The other members all took the same view and said Mr Evans' report really amounted to nothing. It was merely a general essay on charitable aid.

Instead of the administration of the Advances to Sattlers costing 145,000 a year,, as Captain Russell said, the actual amount was LSOOO, while a large balance of the loan was invested. The falling off in the rsilway revenue was very slight and the concessions to users very large. As to the increase of the debt large amounts were for local bodies loans, purchase of land for settlement, improved farm settlement, roading lands for settlement, and the purchase of native lands, over a million and a half acres of the latter having been purchased by the present Government at a cost of L350,000. He claimed that no addition to the public debt had placed any burden on the shoulders of the taxpayers. He denied that he had altered hia views on the prohibition queation since joining the Ministry.

NAPIER, April 1

Thomas Clunie and William Orr, sheep farmers at Opoihi, near Wairoa, were drowned to-day at the junction of the Wairoa and Mongapoiki rivers while crossing cattle. The former -was an old resident, married, and leaves a family. The latter was a new arrival in the district. The bodies have not been recovered.

NEW PLYMOUTH, April 1

The body of a man found at the Sugar Loaves near the breakwater yesterday was dressed in an evening suit, and in the pockets were a lady's gold watch and a gentleman's hunting watch, also L9 10s in gold. A revolver was found near the body which has been identified as that of an Austrian hawker named L»zu, who arrived by train on-March 1.8 and left his portmanteau in the booking-office.
