Taxation of a Great Colonising Agent

The Chairman of the Man&watu Railway Company in his address said the railway had paid no less than L54.793 in Government and local taxation, which wan 1*11,443 more than the shareholders had received by way of dividends. Including the present 6 per cent, the total dividends paid amount to L43.350, equal to L2 2s 6d per cent per annum for twelve years. The gross traffic receipts were L9 1,986 and the working expenses L42.436, bnt the latter was a lower ratio than they might be able to maintain and it would be necessary to make provision for repairs and renewals. The balance carried forward is L423e.
