The Kaiwara Murder

(By

Wellington, Oct. 15.

Documents submitted to the Court of Appeal by Mr Jellicoe in support of the application on behalf of Chemis, which was refused, includes a long affidavit by Mrs Chemis, reiterating many of the allegations which were brought forward in the charge of perjury against the police. She also lays stress on the fact that if Chemis’s trial had occurred two months later both she and Chemis could have given evidence, and that they and their children were tho only ones who could state where he was on the night of the murder. It is also urged once more that other people were on terms of the greatest enmity with Hawkins and that two of them have since left the colony. One of them is particularly suggested as the possible criminal. There was an attempt of some sort at the trial to prove this but it was not persevered with and little attention was paid to it. It is understood that another bill will be introduced next session to give Chemis a new trial.
