Land Board. - Our report of Tuesday’s meeting will be found on page 4. In Suspense.—Owing to the length of our reportofyesterday’scourtproceedings, several letters, reports, etc., are crowded out of this issue.

Home Coming.—A meeting is to be held in the Temperance Hall to-morrow evening of all those who are willing to assist in giving a public welcome to Mr J, W. Supreme Court.—The Grand Jury were in attendance at the court yesterday morning and returned a true bill against Louisa Violet Poole, charged with using an instrument with intent to procure a miscarriage.

River Bulletin. — All the _ Southland rivers were very low yesterday, and it is reasonable to expect that there will be no disastrous floods this spring, unless there be an abnormal rainfall.

Legislative Council.—The only business before the Council yesterday was the consideration of the Fencing Bill in committee, and no alteration of any consequence was made therein.

Orchestral Union’s Concert. — The concert to be given in the theatre on Ist October by the Orchestral Union will be a highly enjoyable one, judging from the capital programme put forward. Mrs Ross will sing “ The better land,” and Mr J. E. Taylor “ The three singers,” and there will be some capital instrumental items. Ah, Now I—The Oamaru Mail reports that at a meeting of the local council a letter from the Invercargill Council, with reference to the Fire Brigade, asked, for various particulars—how many brigades the town ran, whether the men had free quarters, etc. The reading of the letter evoked an assumption from a councillor that it had been misdirected and should have been sent to Chicago. Aquatics.—The Railway Rowing Club held their annual meeting on Tuesday night. In the report mention was made of a handsome flag presented to the club by Mr Masters, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to him. The club has a substantial balance on hand. The following officebearers were elected :—President: Mr S. F. Whiteombe ; vice-presidents : Messrs C. Holm, Biss, T. W. Brebner, and A. T. Ennis; captain :Mr D. Huston ; deputycaptain : Mr D. Nickless ; secretary and treasurer :Mr D. A. Mitchell ; committee : Messrs W. O. Ennis, G. Dunne, J. T. Martin, J. M. Wilson, A. Hasclmore, T. W. Poole, and W. H. McMaster.

Southland Rifle Club.—For the fifth all-comers match—7 shots at 600 yards—yesterday afternoon there was a fair attendance. For the most part the conditions of light and wind were against high scoring. Following are the prize-winners’ scores: — W. Bannerman, 4545444—30; E. Huffadine, 2525555—29; W. Smith, 2450255—23; A. R. Wills, 4242424—22. The first stage of the handicap competition—7 shots at 200, 300 and 500 yards—for the M.H. rifle presented by Mr N. Johnson will be fired on Wednesday next. Members who have competed with the M.H. rifle at N.Z.R.A. meetings are debarred from the above competition, but the committee have provided a prize for such to be shot for simultaneously with Mr Johnson’s trophy. Band Concert. —The concert in aid of the expenses of the City Guards Band to the Timaru contest was held in the theatre yesterday evening, there being a good downstairs house, but the circle was only sparsely tenanted. His Worship the Mayor presided and in the course of his remarks referred to the advancement made by the band and trusted that when tho contest came off that they would be at, or near, the top. The band then played the contest selection “Der Freischutz.” and, later, “ Halevy,” but comment is nob called for in view of the forthcoming contest, a remark which also applies to the instrumental solos played by members of the band. Songs, comic and serious, were interspersed with the instrumental items, the singers being Mrs Mohr and Miss Bishop (duet), Miss Nicholas, Miss Bishop, Mr J, Godso, Mr A. Thompson (encored), and Mr Godward (encored), each one being accorded pronounced and well merited applause. Mrs Mohr played the accompaniments very tastefully.
