The Tyser Liner Star of New Zealand berthed at 11.30 a.m. yesterday, and was busy during the afternoonworking cargo. The Star of NewZealandL is commanded by Captain Simpson, who has the following officers associated with him i-Chief, Mr A. Saxton; second, MrC. Phillips; third, Mr h. W. J.. Carpendale ; fourth, Mr L. M. Vipan. Thochief engineer Is Mr A. Macdonald, who is well known at the port, while the refrigerating engineer is Mr T. Gerrard. The Star of New Zealand will sail for London direct on T The steamer Hauroto arrived from Dunedin at 10 a.m. yesterday, and sails for Melbourne this afternoon. The Ohau will arrive this morning from Lyttelton t O load grain for Auckland. The British Government is testing a new plan for signalling at sea. It consists merely of an ordinary gong fastened to the bow of a ship below the water line. This; nets as a transmitter, and the receivers are gongs of exactly similar tone and vibration, one on each side of the ship below water line.
