DUNEDIN, Dec. 11.

Mr A. Morrison, M.H.R., addressed his constituents at Caversham to-night. He defended the policy of the Government in every respect, dealing largely with their financial proposals, which he approved. He received a unanimous [vote of thanks and confidence.

A woman named Lintern, wife of a gunner at the Central Battery, dissolved 16 match heads this evening and drank the solation. She is believed to be out of danger. For the matriculation examinations 128 candidates have entered at Dunedin, including thirteen for University Junior Scholarships and twenty for medical preliminary pass. Of the total 51 are females. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 11.

At a meeting of the committee of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association the recommendation of the Hawkes, Bay Club, that the championship meeting at Napier should be held on February 22nd and 23rd, was approved. The North Shore Club, Auckland, having cautioned five of its members for suspicious running the secretary was instructed to write to the men mentioned endorsing the local club’s decision, and warning them that if they were reported again they would be dealt with severely. The Balmoral shearing case came before the Magistrate’s Court to-day in the shape of claims by twenty shearers for wages for work done, and damages averaging' in amount about to Ll 5. The evidenc# was| hat the shearers, in accordance with custom, discontinued work at four o’clock on Saturday afternoon and refused to shear a small number of sheep required to complete a mob which had been penned. They were all dismissed and the wages already earned were withheld. Mr Beetham, S.M., gave judgment in favour of the men for the sums claimed for wages and for L 7 damages for wrongful dismissal in each case. The plaintiffs denied having refused to work after four o’clock on Saturday. For the defence it was alleged that there had been a refusal. In giving judgment Mr Beetham said it appeared to him from the evidence that the men were perfectly willing to work on had they been asked in a proper way by the shed manager to do so. A slight but prolonged earthquake shock was felt here at 1.58 this afternoon.
