MELBOURNE, Nov. 5. A shoemaker named Toner quarrelled with and murdered his wife at Elsternwick, almost cutting her head off. A prisoner in Sale Gaol attacked a warder, took the keys, and escaped. • The governor attempted to intercept him,but was knocked down and sustained a dangerous fracture of the skull. The prisoner was recaptured subsequently. Ronda electrified the touts over a mile and a quarter in 2 min. 13J secs. Newman covered a mile and threequarters splendidly in 3.10. Bruin did eleven furlongs in 2.27 J, and Port Admiral in 2.28; Malachite covered a mile nicely in 1,46£. Bonnie Scotland is very proppy.
