The General Elections

INVERCARGILL. The contest for the Invercargill seat was keen, but quiet, and the result was only surprising because of the majority which the successful candidate secured. During the forenoon there was little more than usual animation in the streets, but in the afternoon and towards the evening the partisans of the two candidates displayed greater liveliness, and the interest increased till it culminated almost in excitement. The greatest rushes to the booths were, of course, during the dinner hour and after 5 p.m., but owing to the excellent arrangements made by the Returning Officer, Mr C. VV. Martin, there was no confusion, ’ and everything worked smoothly, satisfactorily and well. A good many ladies voted at the principal booth in the R.M. Courthouse, but a number of others elected to go to the suburbs and record their votes in places where no crowd of eager voters could be expected. The poll closed at seven o’clock, and from then until about eight, the clerks, scrutineers, and other officials were hard at work in the principal polling place making up the returns. Shortly after that hour the suburban returns began to arrive but it was not till about 9 p.m. that Mr Martin was in the position to announce the results, subject to scrutiny, to be as follows :— J. W. Kelly 2422 J. Hatch 1181

Majority for Kelly ... 1241

Informal votes, 39. The announcement was made to a very large crowd, the whole of Tay street in front of the Courthouse being densely crowded. Mr Kelly mounted-the base of a pillar and was received with loud and long-continued cheering. He thanked the electors for having returned him by so large a majority, especially as it was the first time in the history of Invercargill that th? same man had been returned twice running. He appreciated the honour, all the more because of the manner in which the ladies had assisted him, and he assured the electors he would do all he could to merit the confidence they had reposed in him. He thanked all who had voted for him, and he was very pleased to say that the election had been conducted with good feeling between the opposing parties. No doubt that during the heat of an election many things were often said that would have been better left unsaid, but there had been nothing much of that kind during the contest between himself and Mr Hatch. He again thanked the electors for the position they had placed him in and hoped that by his services he might repay them. (Cheers and applause). Mr Hatch said the result satisfied him that Mr Kelly was considered the better man in this electorate. He endorsed that gentleman’s remarks that the election had been carried on in the best possible spirit. He was advancing in years, he might not again appear before them as a candidate, but he was quite satisfied to leave the interests of the district in Mr Kelly’s hands. He thanked the electors who had voted for him and he also thanked those who had voted otherwise and placed the best man at the head of the poll. (Loud cheering and cries of “ Good for you, Hatch.”) A vote of thanks was accorded to the Returning Officer in the usual form, and Mr Kelly was carried off shoulder high by some of his ardent admirers.

It will be seen that the total number of votes polled, including those rejected as informal, was 3642. The total number on the roll is 4664, so that 1022 possible votes were not recorded. MATAURA. Following are the returns from thirty of the thirty-five polling places in this electorate. Further returns cannot affect the position of Mr McNab : —

These figures do not include 10 shearers’ and commercials’ rights not yet arrived. Owing to the late hour at which the returns eame to hand, we had not time to thoroughly analyse the political colours of the successful candidates, but ib is evident that so-called Liberals of all shades will be more numerous in the new Parliament than in any previous session. Roughly, there are 52 who favour the Government policy or something like it; 15 are in opposition, and 3 are independent. The South Island is almost solid "Liberal,” there being 35 of that hue against 3 in opposition and a solitary independent—he of Wakatipu. Auckland shows the greatest defection from the Government.
