(Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, April 1. A cable received here states that argument before the Privy Council in the Judge Edwards case has been concluded. Judgment reserved. In consequence of innumerable complaints as to the way in which the contractor carries on the work of collecting refuse the City Council has decided to determine bis con* tract, and do the work itself. A public meeting called by the Trades Council waa held to-night to ventilate the tramway employes strike. Mr McLe&n, M.H.R., presided and about 400 persons were present. Several prominent members of the Trades Union addressed the meeting, and the following resolution was carried : — " That thia meeting endorses the action of the tramway employes, believing their action to be justified by the circumstances, and pledges itself to assist the men in their eudeavour to obtain justice." So far the differences between the employers and their late employes have been carried on in a proper manner, but both aides show a disinclination to give way. Mr Hall, lessee of the trams, reiterated his intention of resuming the 10 minutes' service on Monday, and declares that abundance of labour is offering. At a meeting of shareholders in the Mokau Coal Co a resolution was passed in favour of forming a defence fund to meet any claims that might be brought against the company by Mr J. M Cleland, who holds a mortgage over the plant, or by the liquidators. Several speakers declared thac the company (of which the levanting A. W. Brown was chairman) had not been properly organised and that none of the directors have held the necessary shares (50) to justify them for the position. Other 3 alleged that those posing as directors were responsible for the liabilities incurred. Nothing waa said as to carrying on work at the mine. PALMERSTON NORTH, April 1. The Hon. R. J. Sedclon addressed a crowded meeting last night, and received a unanimous vote of thanks, with a vote of confidence in the present Government. He dealt principally with the subjects of immigration and the withdrawal of capital, pointing out that the increase of the immigration returns of late, and the opinion of high financial authorities 'were opposed to the assertion that capital was being withdrawn. As to the land and income tax proposals he cited figures to show that the tax would bear much less heavily on the farmer than the property tax had done. BLENHEIM, Apbil 1. The charges against Alexander Waller, preferred by the VVakamarino Gorge Mining Company for malicious injury to the Company's engine were gone into before the R.M. yesterday and was concluded to-day.
