Wreys Bush
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) The quarterly meeting of the Licensing Committee was held at Wairio last Wednesday. Present — Messrs Macdonald (chairman), Neylow, Power and Egan. Michael Griffen's application to have the license of the Railway Hotel, Nightcaps, transferred from J. O. Keheler to himself waa granted. Constable Joyce reported favourably on the Commercial Hotel, Wreys Bush, which had been previously granted a temporary license. Mr Neylow objected to a further renewal as the furniture of the house did not belong to the licensee and had been recently taken away. The licensee (Mr 'Hogan) said that such was not the case, as everything in the house belonged to him, and tbat he was willing to furnish the house to anybody's satisfaction. The license was again renewed for three months, with the stipulation that the house be completely furnished. Mr Fullarton reported that he had received a communication from the Colonial .Secretary stating that the license granted to Mr Bench, of Centre Hill, would not be disputed. — It will be remembered that this new license was granted notwithstanding the local option poll was against any increase of licenses. Mr Jamer Gardner, of Birchwood, is, lam glad to say, improving rapidly. Dr Grigor, of Invercargill, has attended him and says there is no danger. As Mr Gardner is so popular both in this district and Southland this assurance is gratifying to all. The school committee at its last meeting decided to offer a small bonus to children who attended well during the remainder of the quarter. This was on account of the decreased attendance which was endangering the stay of the assistant teacher. '1 he bait has had the desired effect, and the attendance is again up to its usual average. As the chairman (Mr Newton) said " The lot of the rising generation has fallen in happy places — free education and being paid for attending." The weather is fine ; ploughing is finishing, and lambing is progressing satisfactorily. llth Sept. • ' *" ' _ ***"
