The man Flock, charged with the murder of Veitch at Wairoa South, is to be examined as to hia sanity on behalf of the defence. The City North Licensing Committee declined an application that the United Service Hotel, which adjoins the Opera House,Rhould be permitted to remain open till 11 o'clock. They stated that the committeejwould grant 1 1 o'clock licenses if the law were altered so as to provide punishment if houses were kept open after eleven, but in the present state of the law 11 o'clock licenses mean that the house is kept open till midnight. He oaid the Government was impressed with the absolute necessity of encouraging mining, and that they were taking steps to stop the exodus. The Roxburgh Amalgamated Sluicing Company obtained 200 oz. of gold for the past four weeks. The Company appear to have struck an old river bed, and there is said to be indication of the stuff becoming richer. The Island Block Company are said to have had a return of 200 oz. for eight days' work. Mr Carew, R.M., to-day gave judgment for the plaintiff in a case brought against one of a number of men employed in a i>oap factory for four parts of Bretts' Early History of New Zealand ; as he did not consider that the evidence of fraud was substantial enough to do away with the force of the signed document, and there was no evidence that the men were prevented from reading the printed document.
