[United Press Association. — Br Electric TkLEUKAI'U — COPYKNJUT.] Melbourne, Feb. 28. The V.R.C. autumn meeting opeoed today. The weather was magnificent and the attendance was estimated at 2. r ),000. The betting was very spirited on the opening events, hut the Newmai ket Handicap was looked upon in light of such a certainty for Bungebah that business on that event was comparatively restricted. The New South Wales horses proved invincible in the four first events, albeit had Hales not eased his mount after passing Enuc the favourite would assuredly have won the St. jLeger Stakes. Gibraltar's performance was a sterling one, seeing that his condition was none too good ; The Admiral was also lacking in this respect and Correze, although heavily backed by the public, finished fourth, but will doubtless display improved form on Tuesday. Norbcri and Corre/.c were in front of Enuc and The Admiral to the abbatoirs, but from there until half way up the straight Enuc looked all over the winner. Then Hales cut him down, but was fairly caught napping by Nerriker on Gibraltar, whose long strides proved too much for the favourite when set going agiin. Bungebah's victory in the Newmarket Handicap was extremely disastrous to the bookmakers. Following are the results : — Hopeful Stakes (five furlongs)—Albemarle, I ; Bel Giorno, 2 ; Aster, 3. Betting — 7 to 4 against Albemarle, 4 to I Aster, b" to 1 Plan, 10 to 1 Bel Giorno. Won easily by a length and a half. Time — 1 mm. 4J sees. St. Leoer Stakes (1^ mile and 132 yds) — — Gibraltar, 1 ; The Admiral, 2; Knuc, 3. The other starters were King William, Correze, Norbert and Gatling. Betting — 5 to 4 on The Admiral, 3 to 1 against Coireze, 10 to 1 Gibraltar. Won after a desperate finish by half a head, five lengths separating second ami third. Time — 3 mm. 19^ sees. Newmarket Handicap (six furlong 3). Bungebah (Gainsford) ... ... 1 Matador (S;ep"r) ... ... 2 Deerswood (A. Campbell) ... 3 Other starters — Tuksum, Churchill, Too Soou, Clonard, Whitnbrel, Merriment, Gladstone, Victor Hugo, Bendigo, Pygmalion, Wild Rose, Portland, Prattler, Little Bob, Linburn, Investigator, Arruna, Fernando, Ginger, Dilisk, Radoo, The Harbour Light, The Promised Land, Gold Reef, Utter, Proh Pudor, Winifred, Lady Lovell, Toastmaster, Elworthy, Conceit ami Courteous. Betting— 100 to 40 against Bungebah, 100 to 8 Fernando and Matador, 100 to 7 Merriment and Pygmalion, 100 to 5 Churchill, Wildrosc, Prattler, Conceit, Bendigo and Investigator, 100 to 4 Utter and Gladstone, 100 to 3 Deerewood, Ginger, Teksum, Gold Reef aod Radoo, 100 to 2 the others. The flag fell to a good start, Bungebah, next the rails, being one of the first to move. After traversing a furlong the favourite was well in front, Wild Rose and Radeo, in the centre of the course, being the most prominent of the others. Entering the course proper Bungebah had still further impioved his position, with Prattler second, followed by Courteous, Pyginilion, Wild Rose, Radoo, Deerswood and Matador, the latter coming very fast. At the distance post Bungebah had everything settled, Prattler being fully half a dozen lengths behind him, and nexi to him came Deerswood, Matador, Ginger and Pygmalion. From this out Gainsford took matters easily on the favourite whom he landed winner by five lengths. The others fought out a desperate finish. Matador eventually coining with a late run which secured for him second honours by half a neck from Deerswood who had a neck advantage of Praittar ; then came Wild Rose, Too Soon, Investigator, Courteous, Gladstone, Linburn, The Promised Land, Gold Reef, Radoo, and Fernando in , the order named ; Utter, Teksnm, and loastmaater finiaing last. The official time for the race was 1 mm. 16| sees, while several private watches made it 1 mm. 15^ sees. Ascotvale Stakes, for two- year-olds (6 furlongs) — Penance (including 141 b penalty), 1 ; Stromboli, 2 ; Sadin, 3. The others were Ihe Doctor, Ascotvale. Lady Carbine and Homage.
