Cricket. — The match between the I.C.C. and iSutr Clubs was concluded on Wednesday and resulted in a win for the former by six wickets. The Star Club, requiring 98 runs to save an innings defeat, managed to coinfile the respective total of 120, of which Lillicrap, by careful play, made 32, and Mclnerney by tremendous hard hitting managed to place a much-needed o5 (not out) to the credit of his side. A remarkable thing about the performance of these two was that Lillicrap occupied nearly two hours for his 32, while Mclnerney was in but 20 minutes for his 55, his hits being nearly all threes, fours and fives. The I.C.C. obtained the required number of runs to win for the loss of four wickets. The most successful bowlers for the winners were Find lay, Burnes, and T. Kingsland and for the losers J. Kingsland and Gibson. The Frozex Meat Trade. —In their annual review of the frozen meat trade for 1890 Messrs Weddel and Co., of London, point out that the total imports for the past year into London and Liverpool from Australia, New Zealand, the Plate, and Falkland Islands amount to 3,104,59' carcasses, against 2,164,769 in the preceding twelve months. Of the increase close upon half a million came from Naw Zealand, justifying the estimates of writers who have looked for that increase. They also point out that the tendency to deterioration in quality of meat from New Zealand has by no means diminished, and they urge colonists to see whether they cannot improve in this respect. Messrs Wendell state it as their i opinion that frozen mutton can be carried from the colony to London at a freight of Id per lb, still leaving a fair margin of profit. The consignments of frozen meat from Novv Zealand (luring 1890 arnouuted to l,sb'"J,C> 17 carcasses. Farmers' Cooperation*. — The nowly organised Co-operative Association, which commciicea business on the Hi'h of March, under the style or title of the Southland Fanners' Cooperative Agency, publish an important notice tofarmersin our othurcolumns. The Company has been formed for the express purpose of conducting all kiuds of business connected with farming an purely cooperative principles. The premises hitherto occupied by Messrs R. 15. Williams and Co. in Don street have been secured for the Company's purposes, and the business of that firm has also been taken over on tenn3 satisfactory to the directors. Special attention is called to the fact that no one is authorised to receive applications for shares gave the directors and canrassers appointed under the seal of the Company. The Company has been duly registered and starts its career with a. very fair prospect of success. The capital is comparatively small, but it has been advisedly kept so. The directors contemplate going on steadily from a modest beginning to larger things, as the increase of the busiuess may require, preferring this course to one with a pretentious commencement, involving probably contraction rather than expansion in the future. Fru. of I'rh.misk. — Mr Meredith, M.H.R. for Ashley, has had an interview with Mr John Mcivtituic, Minister of Lands, with reference to the extension of vilLigo settlements, so as to adapt them to local circumBtuuces. Mr Meredith pointed out that the village settlers at Medbury and Hurunui had been eking out a subsistence on small holdings of 50 acr^s, and it was now imperative that an additional block of 150 acres should be granted to each settler, otherwise they must collapse. They had no opportunity of obtaining employment, and it was utterly impossible for a family to exist on a small block of land. There was no insuperable diihVulty in the way, as there was adjacent Crowu land which might be utilised and no doubt arrangements could bo made with the Midland R ihvay Company for the acquisition of a block for settlement purposes. The Minister said he was entirely in sympathy with the proposal, and would endeavour to make the grants requested for settlement purposes. He would visit the settlements on his return from Otago, and see for himself what the requirements were. Mr Meredith called attention to the exces- ! sive charge of L 2 for the annual inspection of steam engines and boilers, which hampers local industries. The Minister considered the charge excessive, and would see if it would be possible to reduce it to one-half. Are These Accidents?— Win. Matherson, aged 27, was a Swede, and was employed by a dairy farmer named McSwain, living near Dandeuong, Victoria. As the men were about the work in the cowshed, the son of the employer entered the shed, and, unobserved by the men, began playing with a revolver. While he was doing so, the weapon went off, the deceased received the shot in his side and died from its effects. The lad, aged about. 15, bought the revolver unknown to his parents the day before the occurrence. A verdict of " arri- j (biUnl i/.vith " was recorded. — Recently in ' England, a boy killcu nis father by reckless handling of a revolver. It was known to be loaded, but the senseless fool was sure that there was no charge in the particular chamber which was opposite the hammer. He therefore persisted in presenting tho weapon point blank at hia parent, who entreated him to put it aside, and even showed that he was afraid by endeavouring to get out of the way. The brainless creature, however, rather euj r >yed this, and to show that he was perfectly certain, he followed the unfortunate man with the muzzle and pulled the trigger. - The chamber ".'«■>■ loaded and his lather dropped dead. New Zealand has the credit of having led the way in some directions with salutary legislation ; will some of our representatives bring in a bill making it a penal offence for anyone to point a firearm at any objuct inside of a house oi' elsewhere except in pursuit of game or at a target.
