Southland Education Board.

Friday, 6th February.

The monthly meeting was attended by the Chaiunan (Mr G. Lumsden) and Messrs

Mackintosh, M.H.R., Froggatt, McLeod, Bain, Baldey, Matheson, and Dr Hodgkinson. Henry Hirst wrote pointing out that mining operations at Orepuki were encroaching on land which was, although bow used as a road, still the property of the Board. —Referred to the previously appointed Special Committee with power to act.

An examination of the papers sent in by the school committees showed that the following gentlemen had been nominated for the three vacancies occurring on the Board on the 31st March, the number of committees nominating each beiug as stated : — D. L. Matheson, 59 ; R. McNab, 34 ; G. Lumsden, 33 ; T. Mac Gibbon, 21. Two committees n uninated Mr Morison, but his consent had not been obtained. — It was decided that the election should take place at next meeting, voting papers to be in on or before the '28th February. The Executive Committee reported as follows: — 1. Tliit the following appointments had been ma-le : Scott's Gap : Mary Greenslade, head teacher ; Greenhills : Lawrence Thomson, head teacher ; Tisbury : Martha Hamilton, head teacher ; Invercargill South: Mary McLeo.l, pupil teacher. 2. That the following tenders had been accepted .- Flint's Bush : new school, Robertson and Burnett, L 129 ; Mandcville : new school, Quick and Ballantyne, Ll3l ; Thornbury : painting, Thomas Bait i, Ll2 10s. 3. That the Lumsden Commit n:e had been informed that the position assumed by their teacher in regard to a complaint against his assistant was a proper one, he being responsible to the Board and its Inspector for the discipline of the school. 4. That in connection with overstaffed scho'ls it had beeu decided to take no action relative to the Wreys Bush one during the current quarter, and in the case of Invercargill Middle to call the attention of the committee to the reduced average aud to inform them that consequently nothing would be done during the present quarter to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Miss Hamilton. 5. That Mr Taylor bad been informed that as the conditions on which the Mataora Committee were authorised to accept his tender for painting had not been complied with that tender had now been declined. 6. That the carpenter had been authorised to effect necessary repairs to the roof of the Invercargill South School.

The following applications were granted : Longridge : half cost of painting ; Tokonui : painting; Waihopai : shelter shed and outbuildings, improvements to school grounds and repairs, committee to contribute onethird of the cost ; North Invercargill : half cost of shelter shed and gravelling grounds ; Charlton : permission to sell tank and apply proceeds to sinking well and providing pump.

Tenders were ordered to be called for the following works : — Gordon : teacher's residence of five rooms ; Longridge village, Springhillß, and Wairekiki : two- roomed residence at each ; Wendonside : new school to accommodate 50 pupils (on condition that the committee refund one-half iheauiouir. L 32 15s, lately expended in enlarging the school building) ; Riverton : repairs to teacher's residence ; Otautau ; repairs to teacher's residence, &c. ; Croydon and Otakara Bush : painting. The carpenter was instructed to report as to the probable cost of repairs to the buttresses of the Queenstown school building, and to report on the application of the Ryal Bosh Committee for painting, &c. The Inspector was instructed to report on applications for new schools at Bullendale and Eastern Bush.

Applications for the following works, <tc. , were refused : — Mossburn : an additional partition in the residence now being erected; Kennington : half cost of addition to school building ; Myross Bush : repairs to teacher's residence ; Mokoreta : half cost of laying down glebe in English grass ; Wendon Valley : payment of rent allowance.

It was decided to ask the Otama Committee to take immediate steps to remedy a defect in the construction of a flue pipe by which the school was endangered. At the request of the school committee it was resolved to re-open the school at South Wyndhatn, the lessee of the residence and glebe to receive notice that his lease will terminate on the 28th March.

The secretary was authorised to secure a school site at Caroline.

The request of the Oteramika Gorge Committee that their school be maintained as a full-time school was granted. A further communication from the Waimatuku committee relative to an addition to their school was ordered to be received.

The secretary was instructed to inform Mr C. A. Tipping that unless his son registered a full attendance at the High School, hi» scholarship would be forfeited.

The Inspector reported having examined the following schools, with the results stated: — Upper Shotover: Percentage of passes, 42 ; percentage of failures, 27 ; percentage in class subjects, 39 ; additional marks, 24. Gordon : Passes, 53 ; failures, 4 ; class subjects, 50 ; additional marks, 78.

Accounts and salaries amounting to L 2038 14a 2d were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.
