Cablegrams. — Parnell has been re-elected leader of the Nationalist party in opposition to the wish of the English Liberals. The Nationalists are resisting the work of constructing railways at the cost of the Government in Ireland. "General" Booth's emigration scheme is pronounced impracticable, Mr Gladstone will move in the direction of removing Roman Catholic disabilities. Financial smash in Buenos Ayres has sent gold to 200 per cent, premium. The wool saiea have opened badly. The Australian Unionists have returned LSOOO to their English friends who are pressing them to keep it to relieve distress. Mr Stanley is paying the penalty of his efforts to depreciate his subordinates in their revelations of some of his weak points. Native Elections. — The election of Maori members of the House of Representatives takes place to-day. Lake County. — Mr John Elliott, of Acrowtown, was elected chairman of the Council yesterday. Electioneering. — Mr Bain addresses the electors in East Invercargill and Mr Feldwick those of North Invercargill to-night. The Hon. G. F. Richardson appears at Jttataura in the evening. i Police Changes. — Constable Ferguson, who has been several years in Invercargill and has made a good record as a zealous yet not over-officious public servant, has been transferred to Mataura, a change which he will no doubt appreciate as compared with doing night duty in town. Fatal Accident. — A youth named Albert Philpot, aged 14 years, and a son of a Rimu j resident, was found dead on the road near that place on Tuesday. An inquest was held | yesterday when evidence was given which favoured the conclusion that the deceased ! had fallen out of a cart he was driving and been killed either by the fall or by the wheel ; passing over his head, which was severely fractured. The horse, with cavt attached, \vas found grazing not far from the body. The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death. " The County Chairmanship. — At yesterday's meeting of the Southland County Council Mr I. W. Raymond was elected chairman for the ensuing year. To Mr Raymond belongs the honour of being the first Invercar^ill-born chairman of any local public body, and as the functions of the i County Council are of a very important nature the honour is by no means an inconsiderable one. Invercargill Borough Council. — A meeting of the Council was held yesterday at noon for the purpose of electing representa- ! tives on the H. and C.A. Board; Wallace and [ Fiord Hospital Trust and Southland Hospi- ; tal Trust. Present — The Mayor and Coun- '■ cillors Hail, McLean, McFarlane, Lumsden, j Stead, Roche, and Storie. On the motion of Councillor Storie, seconded by Councillor McFarlane, it was resolved that the candidate who should be elected Mayor at the election then in progress should be the Council's representative on the H. and C.A. Board. On the motion of Councillor Roche, seconded by Councillor Storie, Mr J. W. Hamilton was re-elected to represent the Council on the Wallace and Fiord Hospital Trust. On the motion of Councillor Roche, seconded by Councillor Storie, Councillor McFarlane, was reelected to the Southland Hospital Trust. I
The General Elections. — This is the last day for receiving nominations for the representation of all the electorates in the colony. H. and C.A. Board Elections. — The presiding officer appointed to conduct the election of members of the Board to represent the local contributing bodies attended at the Home yesterday. The grouped boroughs of Winton, Riverton, Campbelltown, and Gore failed to nominate a candidate,and consequently there was no election. Mr J. K. Richards was elected to represent the suburban boroughs of North, East, and South Invercargill, Gladstone, and Avenal. — Mr George Heller was re-elected at Arrow to represent the Lake district at the Board. "It's ax 111 Wind," Etc.— The truth of the old saying is strikingly exemplified by the fact that since the Ist of September, when the Bluff labourers struck work at the Union S.S. Go's vessels, the non-Union men who have from that time been continuously employed at the port, have benefited to the extent of nearly LI2OO, this being within a fraction of the amount paid them by the Company up to the present time for discharging and loading their steamers. During the same period the Company has purchased from the Nightcaps Coal Co no less than 5500 tons coal, all of which has been shipped at Bluff, and the revenue of the colony has also benefited by the railway freight on that quantity from Nightcaps to Bluff, amounting to not far short of L2OOO.
