BRISBANE, Oct. 27. Sir Samuel Griffiths has made a statement in the Assembly dealing fully with the proposals for Riving partial autonomy to Northern Queensland. Mr Macrossan said his proposal should have been accepted three years ago, and it was too late now to object. The northern part of the colony was determined to have total separation. It is un- ' certain whether the question will be further debated this session. MELBOURNE, Oct. 27. [ Three men were drowned in Hobson's Bay ' through the capsizing of a boat during the gale on Saturday. The difficulty with the slaughtermen has been settled. The marine officers are gradually returning to work. The wharf labourers and seamen complain bitterly of the desertion of the marine officers. The Pastoralists' Union is formulating a scheme to organise the free shearers. The Admiral has weakened somewhat for the Derby, H to 1 being laid against him, but sto 2 is now the best offer. Gatling shows signs of hardening, but hundreds to sixteen are being taken. SYDNEY, Oct. 27. The chairman of the Miners' Conference states that the strike is practically at an end owing to dissensions among the marine delegates from Sydney and Melbourne, the latter having sought a conference without the consent of the former. Two large fires occurred at Newcastle yesterday, destroying a sawmill and a tenroomed brick house. The damage is estimated at L7OOO. ADELAIDE, Oct. 27. In reply to a joint communication from the Postmasters-General, asking whether differential cable rates were practicable in view of the refusal of the Imperial Government to contribute, Sir J. Pender says that they are impracticable under the Intercolonial Telegraph Convention ; also that the companies would be no parties to retaliatory measures that would imperil friendly relations with concessionary Governments. The other colonies had not yet replied whether they were prepared to make up the loss to South Australia on the overland route.
