Gore Borough Council

A special meeting of the Council was held o.i Friday evening, the Mayor presiding. The first business was to receive a report re the water scheme, but none was forthcoming. The tender of A. Thomson for office afc the saleyards, being the lowest (L3l IOs), was accepted, as also that of P. Leahy at L2O 43 for works on Gordon street. Thc following motion, as per notice, was proposed by Councillor Whittingham : — " That a committee of the whole Council be formed to inquire into the conduct of the Mayor in relation to the VVorks Committee ; to define the duties and powers of same committee ; also the position of the Mayor in regard to such committee, with a view to the better conduct of the public business and a more satisfactory expenditure of the borough rates." — The motion was ruled out of order, as the meeting was a special one fixed afc an ordinary meeting to carry out certain busiuess. The following motion by Councillor Whittingham was seconded by Councillor Low : — " That the present chairman of all the committees of the Council be now re moved from that office as provided for by [ section 112 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1886, and that each committee elect; its own chairman. " — The motion was ruled out of order, the proper notice not having been given. Councillor Whittingham moved, seconded , by Councillor Ballintine — " That the Council inquire into the circumstances relating to the employment of the servants of the > borough during woiking hours on private • property (section 31, block 16, town of Gore), aud, generally, to review all works of the Council now in hand, and to take such further action as the Council may deem proper. — During a discussion which ensued Councillor Baker rose to a point of order, , saying that what was paid by the Mayor in rates did not justify him in spending the l ratepayers' money. His Worship the Mayor called Councillor , Baker to order twice, and the business of the , meeting terminated.
