Received 24th, 8 p.m. Mr Robert Giffcr, the statistician and financial authority, informed the Colonising Committee of the House of Commons that the immigration scheme propounded for Australia is really visionary. The wool market is firm. At the sales today there was a good attendance and animated competition. BELGRADE, April 23. Received 25th, 1.25 a.m. The Czar has presented Servia with 40,000 rifles and three batteries of artillery. The Skuptschina held a secret meeting to discuss the Militia Bill, at which M. Ristick fainted the situation in the darkest colours, t was absolutely necessary, he declared, for Servia to be ready for immediate action, and the Government must obtain votes sufficient to equip 130,000 Militia. PARIS, April 24. Received 24th, 8 p.m. The French claim to have defeated the Dahomeyans in the recent engagement and state that 500 of the enemy were killed. April 24. Received 25th, 1.25 a.m. The goldfields of Madagascar are to be thrown open to all comers on condition tbat the miners pay the State a royalty of 27 grammes of gold. NEW YORK, April 24. Received 24th, 8 p.m. The trial of O'Donovan Rossa for. libelling Patrick Cassidy has commenced here. Rossa declared that Cassidy was a British spy. BERLIN, April 24. Received 24th, 8 p.m. It is reported that the Emperor has summarily removed nine Generals in command of divisions without assigning any reason. The miners' strike in Silesia has collapsed. The Emperor, learning that Socialist riots are expected on May lst, intends to suppress all meetings and will arrest persons taking part in gatherings in the streets. Prince Bismarck, replying to a deputation to-day, reassured them that he was dismissed from office and excitedly denounced Herr Von Boetticher, Minister of the Interior, whom he accused of intriguing with courtiers to prejudice the Emperor againsc him. The ex-Chancellor also accused Dr. Winclthorst of entrapping him with reference to a uniou of the ministerial and clerical parties. Prince Bismarck added that he differed altogether with the labour policy of the Emperor and was confident it would lead to an increase of social democrats. WASHINGTON, April 23. Received 25th, 1.25 a.m. It is believed that the labour demonstration in America will be a failure. It is reported that unless a satisfactory compromise is arranged by the Secretary to the Treasury the Speaker will refuse to permit the House of Representatives to discuss the silver question. The Committee of Ways and Means has reported in favour of imposing duties on worsted similar to those on woollen goods. The Indianapolis master carpenters have conceded the terms demanded by their men.
