Re Wreck of the Surat.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib,— Being out of the world, as I may say, it is not very often that I see your paper 5 bat being one of the divers from first to last at the wreck of the Surat, I was rather surprised to see the letter signed *' Baxter Pike " in your issue of 26th tilt. If Mr Pike had been placed in the same position ac the owners of the wreck he could not have acted more liberally than they did, as they only asked for what it cost them to recover the passengers' luggage. It was very hard for the owners of the wreck to pay four divers and their attendants, besides a lot of boatmen, to bring this luggage ashore for nothing. To my kiiowledge some of the luggage was offered to some of the passengers for the bare expense the owners were put to. I admit that tbe luggage was in the road of getting at the cargo, but we could h_ve put it over the side, thereby saving sending it to Dunedin. — I am, &c, H. Sherwill, Submarine Diver. Otara, loth March.
