AN IMKKESTINQ LECTURE Mr r. D. McDougaH, of Dundee, Bcotland, lectured before the Dundee Mechanical Society, on " Watch Escapement— Past and Present," on December 21, 1888. The lecturer showed the great importance of Dr. Hook's invention of the balance spring, which, together with the balance wheel, constituted, he eaid, tke trne time-kefping part of tbe watch. He spoke at length of tke duplex escapement, and expressed tke opinion from a acientiflc point of view, tkat it was equal, if not superior, to tke lever as an escapement suitable for first-clast pocket watckes.
