The Birch wood Hounds
* From " Red Deer." The Birchwood hounds met atDipton on 2nd inßt,, and had a capital run over four and a half miles of well laid off country. We found in a stubble paddock of Mr Brown's j over a gorse hedge into the next paddock, and then over another hedge into the main road ; back over the gorse again, and then across a road with a double of gorse and post and rails, where "some slogging was aone but no slaughter ;" through Mr McLachlan's paddocks ; over another post and rail, and then another near that gentleman's house, when a check occurred. On resuming, the first jump was a stiff thorn hedge which emptied two saddles ; the next post and rail also brought down another, and the double following it added to the number of slain ; then across a grass paddock of the Moorabool Estate, and ■fferough a couple of Mr Morison's paddocks to the main road Twenty-five well-mounted men followed the hounds, Among the first flight . were noticeable the Master on Sailor Boy, Mr C. Gardiner on Baron, Mr J. Pye on Maxwelton, Mr J. Stevens on Mountaineer, Mr
Tennant on Sandy, Mr McKinnon on Oarthness, Mr Hasselon Ryepecker, Mr Rowley on Barney, Mr Bunn on Tim, Mr W. Rogers on Ruby, Mr T. Woodward on Bunyip, Mr W. Duncan on May Boy, Mr Blackley on Barb Wire, Mr Laird on a roan and Mr Murray on a bay. There were several falls but no one was hurt, and all agreed that the run was a most enjoyable one. The crowd of spectators was very large, probably a couple of hundred horsemen following up themain road, from which a good view of most of the jumps was. to be had, while straw stacks and other coignsfo vantage were black with spectators. The weather was perfect, the ground in good order, and everyone seemed very mnch pleased. After the run Mr Gardiner made a short speech, thanking those who had assisted, aud with cheers for them and for Mr Gardiner the crowd separated.
