The New Zealand Exhibition

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, — I think there is but little doubt that Southland will derive more direct and indirect benefit from the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition than any other district outside Dunedin, and yet apparently very little interest is beiug taken in the matter. Very few, if any, guarantee shares have been taken outside the 25 taken by Messrs W. Guthrie and Co, 25 by myself, and those taken by W. G. and Co.'s employes. Now, is this fair, and is it wise? la it fair to allow others to find the money, energy, and take all the trouble, while we sit quietly by and reap the benefit? Is it wise to cease taking interest in such important colonial matters? Surely not, if we wish Invercargill to remain the fifth most important city or town in New Zealand. A very large committee was formed some time back, but therejnir assistance (?) appears to have ended. Could not someone be found with time aiftl energy at his disposal, one who would take an interest and work the matter up and get the committee to throw a little more life into it, and see that the district is represented as it should be ? Southland timbers and labour are to be used in the erection of the large building ; this alone I think should induce us to assist the general *

committee in making the Exhibition one worthy of the colony and this important district in particular. I feel sure his Worship the Mayor will be only too pleased to take the lead providing he finds the other members of the committee we agreeable to follow,— lam, etc., £, ICAJ?S*
